Chu Li-wen defended her decision by stating that her participation is driven by a desire for cross-strait reconciliation and peace, emphasizing that individuals should not be penalized for their political beliefs. She highlighted Taiwan's democratic values, which include respecting freedom of speech and thought, and expressed a wish to prevent historical tragedies from recurring. She also alluded to the suffering of KMT members who have faced arrest, mistreatment, or death in mainland China.
The memorial event, titled 'Remembering History, Commemorating Martyrs, Cross-Strait Unity, Revitalizing China,' is organized by the 'Taiwan Area Political Victims Mutual Assistance Association' and takes place at the Ma Chang Ding Memorial Park, a site associated with executions during the White Terror period. The event's focus on Wu Shi, a high-ranking spy celebrated by Beijing and recently featured in a TV drama, underscores its sensitive nature and the differing historical interpretations between Taiwan and mainland China.

据《自由时报》报道，郑丽文星期六（11月8日）预计将参加统派社团举办的“50年代白色恐怖秋祭追思慰灵大会”。这场大会最主要的追思对象，是中国大陆曾经安插在台湾政府内的最高阶间谍吴石。吴石后来被判死刑，被北京奉为“烈士”，近期还通过电视剧《沉默的荣耀》宣扬他的事迹。
这场活动由“台湾地区政治受难人互助会”举办，地点选在吴石等人被枪决的台北市马场町纪念公园，活动主题是“铭记历史、缅怀先烈、两岸同心、振兴中华”。
报道称，追思活动的流程中，除了有郑丽文的致辞，还包括“台湾民主自治同盟”向在台湾牺牲烈士致敬。不过，台盟并非台湾政治组织，而是中国大陆的民主党派，是对台统战组织之一。
对此，民进党发言人戴玮姗星期五（7日）批评：“郑丽文上任后首场公开行程竟是向共谍致意，如此敌我错置、令人错乱，难道是在肯定共谍行为吗？”
戴玮姗指出，相关活动流程还安排中共在台统战组织代表出席致敬，等同让郑丽文与中共政党同台，营造“国共并肩”的政治画面。 “此次秋祭虽打着纪念白色恐怖的名义，实际追思对象多为中共情报人员，主办单位甚至以陆剧《沉默的荣耀》宣扬共谍精神，统战意味浓厚。”
戴玮姗认为，郑丽文此举等同接受中共史观、配合统战操作，“令人不禁质疑，郑丽文到底是台湾的国民党主席，还是中国的国民党主席？”
据三立新闻网报道，郑丽文星期五表示，台湾民主转型几十年，是一个充分尊重政治言论自由、政治思想的地方，所以明天出席相关祭悼活动，“就是希望两岸和解、两岸和平，我们不需要再为自己的政治信仰付出代价”。
郑丽文说，在台湾有非常多“共谍案”，也有国民党党员、政治工作者在中国大陆被逮捕甚至凌虐、牺牲生命，坐了几十年黑牢；这是一个历史的悲剧，希望悲剧不要复制、不要发生。
