The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) of Bahrain has launched a competitive solicitation process for a 100 MW AC utility-scale solar PV project targeting a commercial operation date of September 30, 2027.  

To be developed on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis, the Bilaj Al Jazayer (BAJ) Solar Independent Power Producer Project will support the kingdom’s national target of achieving a 20% share of renewable energy mix by 2035 under its National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP).  

The broad scope of work for the winning bidder will be development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance for 25 years, along with decommissioning and site restoration as part of its job. 

The tender call was issued on October 16, 2025, with the last date for bid submission being December 28, 2025. Details are available on the government website.  

EWA had initially announced the project with up to 150 MW capacity in August 2025, to be located near Bilaj Al Jazayer (see Middle East & Africa Solar PV News Snippets).  

At the end of 2024, Bahrain had 66 MW of solar PV capacity installed across the country, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
