AsianFin -- As the smartphone industry enters a new upgrade cycle this September, MediaTek has unveiled its latest flagship 5G chip, the Dimensity 9500, signaling a major leap in performance, AI capabilities, and mobile gaming experience.

The launch comes just as Apple introduced its annual iPhone lineup and ahead of flagship releases from OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and other manufacturers.

Built on third-generation 3nm process technology, the Dimensity 9500 promises substantial improvements in on-device AI, professional imaging, console-level gaming, and network connectivity. Smartphones equipped with the chip are expected to hit the market in the fourth quarter of 2025.

“Computing power, performance, and AI are crucial benchmarks for 2025 flagships,” a MediaTek executive said. “AI is becoming increasingly integral to daily life worldwide, and we believe it won’t be long before it becomes a core feature for Chinese users as well.”

Over the past 28 years, MediaTek has grown into one of the world’s top five IC design companies, holding the number one global market share in smartphone SoCs for five consecutive years. Official data shows that more than 20 billion devices have been powered by MediaTek chips, with roughly four in ten people globally owning a phone using its technology.

The Dimensity 9500 is built on a new PC-grade ARM V9.3 architecture, featuring one C1-Ultra super core clocked at 4.21GHz, three C1-Premium super cores, and four C1-Pro cores. It also supports the SME2 matrix computation instruction set and four-channel UFS 4.1 flash storage architecture.

Performance metrics reveal a 32% boost in single-core performance and a 17% improvement in multi-core performance over the previous generation. Peak power consumption for the super core is cut by 55%, with multi-core peak power down 37%. MediaTek executives claim the chip now delivers PC-level single-core performance comparable to Apple’s current A19 Pro.

The Dimensity 9500 features the next-generation G1-Ultra GPU, offering a 33% increase in peak performance while reducing power consumption by 42%. Ray tracing performance improves 119% over its predecessor. The chip also introduces GPU Dynamic Cache architecture, a mobile Raytracing Pipeline, and Dimensity Star Speed Engine - Frame Doubling Technology 3.0, enabling realistic visuals and supporting Unreal Engine 5.6 MegaLights and 5.5 Nanite solutions.

MediaTek has invested heavily in on-device AI, integrating a dual NPU into the Dimensity 9500. The new architecture doubles peak performance while cutting power consumption by 56%. The chip supports 4K text-to-image generation, the Generative AI Engine 2.0, and BitNet 1.58-bit large model computation, reducing storage requirements for AI tasks.

“These past two years have been an incubation period for AI,” Chen Guanzhou, MediaTek COO, said. “Starting later this year, we’ll see more AI applications on flagship smartphones. Our investment in NPUs has doubled, reflecting their importance for future mobile applications.”

Mobile imaging has become a major battleground in the flagship segment. The Dimensity 9500 integrates the Imagiq 1190 image processor, supporting professional-grade output up to 200 megapixels. It enables real-time subject tracking, 4K 60fps portrait video recording, and dual-track stabilization for 4K 120fps video. MediaTek executives say these advancements put Android devices ahead of Apple in certain video recording capabilities.

As smartphone makers prepare their flagship launches, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 sets a high bar for performance, AI integration, and imaging. With the first devices expected later this year, the chip could redefine expectations for next-generation Android devices.
